A developer has asked you to test their app and sent you a link. This guide shows exactly what to do, in order, with the mistakes that stop most people from joining. If you are the developer, send this page to your testers: it removes most of the questions they will ask you.
To join a Google Play closed test, make sure your phone is signed in to the Play Store with the Google account the developer added, open the opt-in link they sent you, choose to become a tester, and then install the app from Google Play. After that, keep the app installed, stay opted in and use it until the developer says the test is over.
Google explains the tester side on its test setup page. Below are the same steps with the mistakes to avoid.
You need a Google Account or Google Workspace account. It has to be the exact address the developer put on the tester list, and it has to be the account signed in to the Play Store. For a closed test that uses a Google Group, Google says you must first join the group, and only group members can join the test. For the difference, read email list vs Google Group.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You have a personal and a work account | Ask the developer which one they added, then sign in with that one |
| The developer added a different address | Send them the address of the account signed in on your phone |
| The test uses a Google Group | Join the group with the right account, then open the link |
| Your phone has only one account | Check that it matches what the developer entered, including spelling |
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Item not found | Wrong account, or the link is too new | Switch accounts, or try again in a few hours |
| The page says you cannot become a tester | Your email is not on the list or the group | Send the developer your exact address |
| You search Google Play and see nothing | Closed tests are not always shown in search | Use the link, not search |
| The Install button is missing | You have not opted in yet | Open the link again and complete the opt-in |
| Install works, but the app is the live version | The test version updates in a few minutes | Wait, then reopen the app |
More fixes are in closed testing link not working, and developers can read why testers are not counting.
A tester helps most by behaving like a normal user. Open the app on different days, try more than one feature and write down anything confusing. You cannot leave a public review on a test version, but Google says open and closed testers can send private feedback through Google Play, and you can message the developer directly.
| Day | What to try |
|---|---|
| 1 | Install, open the app and check the first screen and permissions |
| 2 to 4 | Use the main feature. Note crashes and slow screens. |
| 5 to 9 | Try settings, login, notifications and rotating the phone |
| 10 to 13 | Use it as you would normally. Report anything that feels off. |
| 14 | Tell the developer you are still in and what you think |
Please do not click any ads in the app, because that can cause problems for the developer's ad account. See AdMob limited ad serving.
Yes. The opt-in page normally offers an option to leave the program, and you can uninstall the app at any time. Be aware that developers who need to meet Google's requirement depend on testers staying opted in for at least 14 days in a row. If you promised to test, tell the developer before you leave so they can replace you. They explain why in what to do if testers leave.
Joining a test means installing an app that has not been released publicly yet, so use common sense.
If you are the developer, copy this and adjust it. It answers the questions testers ask most. For the full sending process see how to share your closed testing link.

Message me if anything breaks. Thank you!
Still short of testers? How to get 12 testers lists five ways to find them, and our complete closed testing guide shows the whole route to production.
You need a Google Account or Google Workspace account, and it must be the one you are signed in with in the Play Store on your Android phone. The developer has to add that same address to the test.
Google says that for closed and internal tests, searching Google Play may not show the app. Use the opt-in link or Play Store URL the developer gave you.
Google says that for paid apps in open or closed tests you must purchase the app, while internal testers can install paid apps for free. Ask the developer before you buy anything.
No. Google says you cannot leave public Google Play reviews for test versions. Send feedback to the developer instead.
Check that you are signed in with the account the developer added, and that you did not use a different Google account. Right after the first publication the link can take several hours to work, so try again later.
Stay until the developer says the test is finished. Developers who need to meet Google's requirement need testers opted in for at least 14 days in a row.
